Matthew 2:11 (NLT)
They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
People had been told a prophesy for years that the Messiah was to be born around this time. The Wise Men, or “Magi” were basically astrolongers and astronomers. They related their Science to Religion and studied the stars. They were usually very intelligent and very smart. When an unusual star appeared in the sky they were over curious to see if it led to the projected place of their new King. Indeed it did so but the journey was not easy and it definitely wasn’t quick.
The Wise Men had traveled at least 400 miles. We know this because the Bible says they came from the East (Matthew 2:1). During this time the areas considered ‘The East’ would have taken them at least two to three weeks by camel and over a month by foot alone. However, what stands out the most is that they were following a star. Stars are only seen at night. This means the journey took even longer because they mostly traveled at night only. By the time they made it to Bethlehem, Jesus had to be at least one years old and more than likely older. We know these Wise Men, despite how much they loved Science, were also religious because they came prepared to find their new Messiah. They even brought gifts.
Gold was usually associated with Kings and Queens. Christians believed Jesus was the King of Kings. So, one of the Wise Men brought Gold. Many of us can’t afford to buy Gold but the kind of gift we buy someone signals how much we value them.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BUY A GIFT FOR EVERYONE YOU KNOW. A gift is given to someone you value very highly. Because we don’t value everyone the same you don’t have to buy gifts for everybody. Some people are just good friends. You don’t have to buy them all gifts. They should understand. But, you bring a gift to a person who has changed your life. When you do, show them how much you value them. That gift doesn’t have to be Gold but it can have a Golden thought.
Is an incense that was usually used during Worship. This Wise Man’s gift meant people would worship the new King. Of course we can’t go looking in every store for Frankincense. Not everyone even likes incense and we don’t necessarily need incense to Worship. However, this gift was a Spiritual Gift.
SPIRITUAL GIFTS IS A WAY OF SHARING WORSHIP. We always tend to buy clothes and material gifts for each other because we have allowed this Holiday to become so wordly. However, some of the best gifts to buy each other are gifts which help us grow Spiritually. If you know someone is struggling in an area, maybe a gift them book to help them understand how to overcome it. Positive Home Decor is getting very popular.
IF A PERSON VALUES A SHIRT MORE THAN A GIFT THAT BRINGS LIGHT INTO THEIR LIFE THE SHIRT IS NOT GOING TO STRENGTHEN THEM OR THEIR REALTIONSHIP WITH YOU.
This perfume is what they put on dead bodies to restrain the odor. The Wise Men knew it had a much deeper meaning. It certainly implied that Jesus would suffer and die. But this gift wasn’t just about perfume or cologne. It was about believing the assignment on His life.
IF YOU REALLY WANT TO GIVE SOMEONE A GIFT GIVE THEM A GIFT THAT SHOWS YOU BELIEVE IN THEIR MISSION.
If a person owns a business get a gift that would help their business grow. If a person has a Non-Profit Organization or a Community Outreach, get gifts that would help build their outreach. If a person has an idea, get them a gift that would help them break ground on their goal. A thoughtful gift to remind them that you are supporting them as they try to reach their goal. It can be a simple as a coffee mug reading “Losing Pounds Everyday”. That’s a very valuable gift for a person who is seriously trying to lose weight.
The Greatest Gift
People underestimate love. Kind acts carry you a long way. People can outgrow a shirt quickly. Jewelry can be stolen and broken. Cars can be wrecked but acts of kindness are taken seriously by God forever. He doesn’t forget our acts of kindness. We can buy all the gifts we want but if can’t forgive and love then we don’t truly know God yet.
1 Corinthinas 13:13
Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.
